Understanding Your Vehicle’s Braking System

Understanding Your Vehicle’s Braking SystemYour car’s brake system is one of its most critical safety systems and as such, it is imperative to keep it maintained and functioning properly. Doing so helps ensure safe vehicle control and operation under a wide variety of conditions. If you suspect any problems or have any concerns, you should have it inspected as soon as possible.

The average car owner may not be familiar with how the vehicle’s braking system works. You may have heard terms thrown around, “caliper”, “drum brakes”, “hydraulic system”, but not understood how they work together from pushing the brake pedal to stopping the car. It all starts when you push the brake pedal. That force generates hydraulic pressure in the master cylinder. The master cylinder uses brake fluid to transfer pressure through the hydraulic lines and hoses to the calipers and/or wheel cylinders (one at each wheel). The calipers and wheel cylinders use that pressure to squeeze the brake pads and/or shoes against rotors and/or drums to stop your car.

Discs Or Brake Drum Replacement

Disc brakes are made up of rotors, pads, and calipers, among other, smaller parts. The rotor is a metal disc that rotates with the wheels. The stationary mounted caliper holds a pad on each side of the rotor and slides to force the pads against the rotor when pressure is applied. Drum brakes, conversely, are made up of shoes (which function as the pads in a disc brake system) and are enclosed in a drum (which functions as the rotor in a disc brake system). The shoes push against the drum when pressure is applied. The resulting friction, from the pads against the rotor or the shoes against the drum, slows the vehicle.

Brakes are eventually going to need replacement. Some vehicles have indicators to help alert you when new pads are needed, however, it is recommended that as a car owner you are proactive about knowing the condition of your brakes. Avoid letting the brakes get too worn (i.e., metal to metal), as that can mean a more expensive rotor or drum replacement and a potential safety issue.

Preventative Maintenance For Brakes

Preventative Maintenance For BrakesThe braking system on your vehicle works hard every time you drive. Over time, through normal wear and tear, brakes are rendered ineffective or useless. It’s important to have regular maintenance performed to keep the entire system in optimal shape.

The braking system on each wheel of your vehicle consists of a disc (or rotor), a caliper, and a rubber brake pad. It may seem that a simple push on the brake pedal causes the vehicle to come to a complete stop, but it’s a bit more complicated. The depressed pedal sends brake fluid through the brake lines as a piston moves in the master cylinder. As pistons in the caliper are initiated, the brake shoe pushes against the rotor, causing friction on the brake drum. Essentially, the pressure on the drum will slow the roll of your vehicle, eventually causing it to stop.

Using A Mechanic vs. DIY repairs

Brake pad replacement is one of the seemingly simpler tasks that many DIY car owners might try themselves. While it is one of the easier fixes to master, it’s important that you know exactly what you’re doing if you attempt this at home. When it comes to something as important as your brakes, we at Clark Automotive always recommend a certified mechanic over DIY work. You may save yourself a few bucks, but if the pad isn’t fitted properly or damage occurs to the caliper during the fix, your vehicle may be rendered unsafe on the roads. If your brakes are squeaking, sticking, or seem to take much more pressure than usual to engage, it’s time to see a mechanic.

ASE-Certified Mechanics At Clark Automotive

When you consider the parts that go into a typical braking system, it can be daunting. Therefore, the ASE-certified Mechanics at Clark Automotive always suggest a preventative maintenance plan to customers. A plan typically includes checking over brakes and making small repairs or adjustments, such as replacing your brake pads. Preventative maintenance costs, however, consider the additional funds you will spend if your brake pads go unrepaired over time!

Brake Assessment And Repair Services

Brake Assessment And Repair ServicesIf you have ever been driving in the rain or, even worse, in the snow or on ice and needed to stop but found that pressing the brake did not stop your vehicle as quickly as you needed it to, you immediately understood the importance of your vehicle’s braking system. Most people tend to take their brakes for granted, and for good reason. Most brakes are very well constructed and built to last. But your vehicle’s brakes also experience great friction and are under constant pressure, and all mechanical parts eventually wear down. Your vehicle’s brakes are no different. If you have concerns about your brakes’ ability to stop your vehicle when you need it to stop, pay a visit to Clark Automotive.

Brake Assessment, Repair, Resurfacing And Replacement

Our technicians are experts in brake assessment, repair, resurfacing, and replacement. Even though the braking system is relatively simple in that pressing the brake pedal initiates the process of slowing and stopping your vehicle, the system is still made of moving parts, which experience the forces of friction over time. When one or more components in the braking system wear down, your ability to slow and stop your vehicle can become compromised. The wearing down of the various parts of your brakes does not always mean that failure is imminent or even that replacement is necessary. A frequent repair that we offer is the resurfacing of brake rotors, which can restore the integrity of your brakes and return them to almost new condition.

The fundamental importance of your vehicle’s brakes means that they should be checked periodically, according to your manufacturer’s recommendations. Clark Automotive is ideally suited for this type of essential maintenance. To help you maximize the life of your vehicle’s brakes, we can make some recommendations based on what you share with us about your driving habits. For instance, if you inform us that you spend a lot of time on your commute in stop and go traffic, your brakes are likely being stressed more than they need to be. This problem is made worse by aggressive driving, which occurs when accelerating quickly and stopping quickly. All brakes will eventually experience some degree of wear, but that process is hastened by frequent acceleration and hard stopping.
